Kaizer Chiefs have some tactical thinking to do after taking some positives from their 2-0 defeat away to champions Mamelodi Sundowns at the weekend.

Coach Stuart Baxter made a couple of tweaks when chasing the game on Sunday – bringing on Sibusiso Mabiliso for his Amakhosi debut and asking Sifiso Hlanti to switch to a centre back role alongside Erick Mathoho and Daniel Cardoso.

He also later withdrew Hlanti for a more attacking option in midfielder Lebogang Manyama, yet again adjusting the formation for Chiefs to try claw their way back.

“We’ve had these discussions. Before every game I usually sit down with the technical squad and ask what if questions,” Baxter told the media.

“What if we go a goal down, or are chasing the game and we go a man down – what if we want to lock out the game. So before you go and sit in the heat of the battle, then you’ve already given yourself a couple of ideas.”

The Englishman said he may very well have some of that thinking in future games, although it’s not a card he would have wanted to play when on the backfoot.

“But we didn’t want to do it (changes against Sundowns) in those circumstances, missing a penalty and having to give it a charge. I would put it this way, it gives you a better idea if those tactical adjustments can be used again in the future. Did it give you what you wanted or did you end up messing up the balance of the team around,” the coach added.

Do you remember the Chiefs coaches over the years?
